WorkPAD --- LearnPAD --- Perform PAD ????
After 5 days of experiments with the iPAD, I am sensing a large opportunity for this genre of device (eg. tablet, Apps and multi-touch) to be the platform for business solutions that fall into three categories:
- WorkPAD: Imagine a "point solution" that is designed to be the portable work tablet for a specific person in a specific role. For instance, an Animal Vet might have a WorkPAD that allows them to do all paperwork, access records, search for medications and diseases and manage their schedule. WorkPAD's would either be created with a APP that is for a function or might be built collaboratively by the organization and the worker.
- LearnPAD: This is a similar "point solution" but now optimized around a major learning program. For example, a rising leader in an organization is taking a 2 year development process, or a learner is in a Series 7 Prep class for financial services. The LearnPAD would be designed around learning event, resources and "affordances". Content would be on the PAD or accessed remotely - tied into an LMS and Collaboration System. The LearnPAD might be "bundled" with a higher end learning program.
- PerformPAD: This is really the WorkPAD with a large amount of Performance Support resources - both prompting, pop-up, FAQ as well as access to live support. Once again, it might be designed with and by the worker, their manager and based on performance gaps and requirements.
I'm interested in a work/learn/perform pad app (not even going to try to coin an acronym for that).
ReplyDeleteWe (JetBlue Airways) have a structured XML-based content management system (operational policies and procedures) and an LMS, with crewmembers (employees) dispersed geographically (61 cities), many of whom don't have regular computer access (ramp crew, pilots, baggage handlers).
When a regulation changes we need to:
> Notify CMs of the change
> Get their acknowledgment that they've read the change documentation (with an audit trail)
> Show/teach them what's changed
> Test their understanding (maybe for an updated certification)
> Make refresher/JIT support materials available
> park all of this activity in the FAA "system of record" (LMS)
..oh, and in some cases the details are different whether the CM is in JFK or BOS.
See where this is going?
