iPAD as a Sleep Disrupter?

Sleep Disruption from iPad Reading Light? Several articles have appeared in the last 2 weeks about possible sleep disruption from the backlight impact of reading on an iPad right before going to sleep. I actually noticed that after reading for an hour, which usually makes me quite ready for sleep, I was wide awake. Yet, reading from the Kindle, which is NOT backlit, did not have that effect on me. I will tell you one risk - when I drop off to sleep and drop my paperback, there is no risk of damage. But, a dropped iPad is a different matter.

  1. There is an Amazon Kindle app for the iPad, one I just donwloaded last night.

    Are there studies regarding the Kindle iPad app and sleep disruption? The Kindle iPad app does have the gray background. Is it a gray, backlit background that could still disturb sleep?

  2. Even better: The iPad Kindle App has a night mode that prevents you from staying wide awake. Tapp on the font icon and selct the grey color on the black background. In addition you can use the slider to adjust brightness.
